Australian Aviation Hall of Fame looking for partners

The Australian Aviation Hall of Fame was originally the idea of RAAA CEO Paul Tyrell, but the nascent initiative, based in Wagga Wagga, now has a board of enthusiastic and highly experienced aviation luminaries to take it forward.

Board members include Chris Manning, Geoff Breust (Chairman), Kerry Carmichael and Peter Adams as well as Tyrell. But it also includes the Mayor of Wagga and the Vice Chancellor of Wagga’s Charles Sturt University. And the board has considerable support from several Wagga institutions and organizations, including the City Council and TAFE.

The stated aim is “to establish the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame, to formally induct into it people and organizations that have made an outstanding contribution to civil aviation in Australia and Australians who have made an outstanding contribution internationally”.

Inductees will then be honoured by a public exhibition of their contribution, via a website and also in a dedicated facility in Wagga.

“The money we’re looking at is for professional curator services and to employ really top professional services to develop the website and for a secretariat,” Geoff Breust said at the recent Avalon Airshow.

“We have a proposal that’s gone out to a number of major organizations, seeking sponsorship on a founding partner basis. What we’re looking for is a contribution of $25,000 from each of five founding partners for five years to get it up and running. That will give us annual sponsorship revenue of about $120,000 which is really what we need to have that professional curator and to effectively develop the website and the displays. It’ll be a virtual hall of fame initially, but ultimately we’d move to bricks and mortar and an actual physical display in Wagga in perhaps five years’ time.

“The interest has been really very strong so we’re hopeful that we’ll get all the founding partners in. But we’ll also offer sponsorship at lower levels to other organisations, particularly for an annual induction dinner. We plan to hold the inaugural dinner in Wagga on Saturday 19 November this year and we’ll probably do 10 or 12 initial inductions at that event.”

Founding partners will be recognized in perpetuity in every possible way, both on the website and through the facility.
