Dr Tony Whitehead is joining the Institution of Engineering and Technology as director of governance and policy. Whitehead previously held the post of joint head of the Science in Government unit, where he worked on science and engineering issues. He was also joint chair of the Science and Trust Expert Group and a member of the DCMS Science and Research Advisory Committee. Whitehead has also been director of science and society in the Office of Science and Innovation, head of the Home Office Science Policy Unit and deputy director of the National Measurement System.

AWL has appointed Dennis Broekhof as laser safety officer to implement its policy on laser safety and to ensure that employees uphold the laser safety regulations. He has worked for AWL for many years and has a sound knowledge of the organisation, laser welding and safety.

Burkert is underlining the importance of steam engineering and condensate management to its fluid control systems solutions, by offering a series of free one-day and three-day educational training courses. The courses, which comprise “An Introduction to Steam”, “Steam and Condensate systems”, “Pressure Reducing & Heat Transfer Systems” and “Clean Steam and Sterilisation” are scheduled for February of 2011.

Halesowen-based Sandvik Materials Technology UK, has successfully renewed its Investors in People Award. The manufacturer and distributor of advanced stainless steels, special alloys, titanium and other high performance materials achieved its qualifying award back in 2004. “We are continually looking to improve our organisation for the benefit of our customers and our employees,” explained Haydn Eagle, Sandvik UK Market Manager. “The assessment helps us to do this, identifying areas of effective practice and suggests potential areas of improvement.”

Sensor and sensing systems company Trolex has new leadership. The family company, owned and operated by John Pierce-Jones, now sees the introduction of his two sons appointed to the board to lead a new direction for the company. Glyn Pierce-Jones becomes managing director with special responsibilities for product certification and sales and marketing and Lee Pierce-Jones becomes operations director with responsibility for production, quality and research and development. John Pierce-Jones takes up a new role as chairman of Trolex.

SKF and Imperial College London have officially opened the “SKF University Technology Centre in Advanced Modelling and Measurements in Tribology”. The unit will focus on tribology modelling and advanced testing. Research carried out at the Centre will aim to prolong the life of bearings in a wide variety of applications and operating environments

The Energy Institute (EI) has elected its first chartered energy manager - Owen Everall CEng MEI, who is the site engineering and facilities manager for Syngenta. The EI launched this new grade of registration earlier in the year to support and recognise professional practitioners who are responsible for managing energy to reduce use, increase efficiency and reduce carbon emissions on a daily basis. Mark Jones, managing director of industrial fan manufacturer Woodcock & Wilson Ltd, has been elected chairman of the UK’s Fan Manufacturers Association (FMA). The appointment is a change for the FMA, whose chairmen in recent times have all been from the commercial sector. Whilst the industrial and commercial sectors have their own different interests, there are many issues and topics that have a bearing on both. Recently, energy efficiency has become the main focus for FMA members, in particular the new EU regulations on fan efficiency and the ISO standard on efficiency classification of fans.

Colin Mander, managing director for Gardner Denver (CompAir) UK and Ireland, has been appointed as the new president of the British Compressed Air Society (BCAS) – a UK trade body for suppliers and users of compressed air equip, this year marking its 80th anniversary. Mander has been working in the compressed air industry for over 28 years and is the society’s 53rd president.

Microlease has appointed David Knights as director of asset management to support its business in EMEA, Asia Pacific and the US. Knights joins from the worldwide measurement group Agilent where he was a director, covering major accounts in China, the US and Europe. He spent most of his career at Hewlett Packard, before moving across to Agilent when HP formed the separate company in 1999. At Agilent, Knights helped Microlease develop financial solutions to grow its customer base. Knights started his career as an R&D engineer for a Bracknell-based firm having achieved a masters in semiconductor physics from Manchester University.

Graham Nicholson, managing director of Tony Gee and Partners, has been elected chairman of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering. He will take office on 1 January 2011. He has been responsible for the detailed design of a variety of bridge and other structures in the UK and South East Asia and despite his current responsibilities for the development of Tony Gee and Partners he keeps a “hands on” approach to design.

BEKO Technologies has appointed Clare Darby as sales/ service administrator. She joins BEKO from Sunlight Service Group where she worked as a sales administrator before leaving to set up and run her own online bridal accessory and children’s hair accessory business.

IChemE CEO David Brown has recently been named as one of the top ’green leaders’ in the UK West Midlands - in a list compiled by Sustainability West Midlands. As IChemE boss, Brown has strongly promoted sustainable operations as a major driver for both chemical, biochemical and process engineering professionals and the companies that depend on these areas of engineering. In addition to his work with IChemE, he is also involved in Birmingham Science City, where low carbon energy is a major theme. Brown is also chairman of the steering group for CABLED, the largest of the current set of electric vehicle trial projects in the UK.

Adept Scientific has taken on two new staff to support its data acquisition products. Henrique da Silva, who will concentrate on DAQ sales, has a masters degree in electronics & computer engineering, and previously co-founded a Portuguese company dedicated to hardware/software development. Elizabeth Northrop will be concentrating on technical support. She has an MEng in systems engineering from Loughborough University.  Her work placement while doing her masters was as an applications engineer at National Instruments.

The energy management division (EMD) of sustainable power group ENER-G has appointed five senior managers to drive an ambitious UK and international expansion programme. The appointments are part of a strategic re-positioning of energy management activities aimed at cementing EMD’s position as a market-leader in this field, as well as facilitating further international expansion. Dawson Shanahan, a manufacturer of cold formed and precision machined parts, has appointed Jeff Kiernan as commercial director for its global operations. Kiernan has been with Dawson Shanahan for eight years, originally joining as operations manager before becoming commercial manager. A graduate engineer with management qualifications, he has a background in production engineering and quality control and has held production, technical and senior management positions at various multinationals.

Dr. Gunther Kegel, president, Pepperl+Fuchs GmbH, has been elected chairman of the Fieldbus Foundation board.  He replaces John Berra of Emerson Process Management, who is retiring after serving 16 years as FF leader. Other executives named to the foundation’s board include: Daniel Huber, senior group VP, business unit manager - open control systems, process automation division, ABB; Takuji Hosoya, managing executive officer - advanced automation company, Azbil (Yamatake); Peter Zornio, Emerson’s chief strategic officer; and Ralph Carter, president, Rockwell software business, Rockwell Automation.

SGS has appointed Pascal Sutz as the new vice president of its nuclear services unit. Sutz worked as an engineer in the design and construction of nuclear plants at EDF, before joining SGS France. He has held several management roles within the French company’s Nuclear Industry Services, including as general director of its Alphatest subsidiary. In 2007, he joined the SGS corporate team, based in Geneva, to support the deployment of company strategy in its global projects.

Engineering services group Redhall has recently announced that it is bringing its nuclear operations – Jordan Nuclear and Steels Engineering Services – together as Redhall Nuclear and has appointed Helen Simms as managing director of the new £40m-turnover, 400-employee unit. Simms joins the group from Amec Nuclear, where she was unit director, nuclear services. She has spent the last 16 years of her career in the UK nuclear sector, and as a chartered mechanical engineer has specialised in working with engineering businesses.

Thomas Waggershauser is the new sales director at IXXAT Automation GmbH. Waggershauser has been a sales engineer for IXXAT since 2004, with responsibility for CAN and Automotive Systems. Prior to that, he was a product manager for remote maintenance systems und signal generators at Agilent Technologies.

Prof. Jeff Magee, currently the faculty’s deputy principal (research) and head of the department of computing, has been appointed principal of the faculty of engineering at Imperial College London, with effect from 1 Jan 2011. He has over 30 years’ experience of computer science research, focusing on the software engineering of distributed systems, and has worked extensively with industry, including BP, BT and Barclays Capital. Magee succeeds Prof. Stephen Richardson, who has held the roles both of principal and deputy rector since late 2009.

Sensor manufacturer Analytical Technology has appointed Wesley Hazley as UK business development manager within its newly established industrial division, which serves the food & beverage, process and engineering industries. Hazley began his career as an aircraft technician for the Royal Navy. He then worked as a senior sales engineer at Precom Engineering, specialising in water treatment and purification solutions. Prior to joining Analytical Technology, Wesley was headhunted by a multinational to develop its industrial water treatment monitoring sector.

Severn Trent Services has appointed Mohanned Babieh to its global business development team as senior sales manager responsible for selling filtration products and growing sales in the Middle East. He is based in the company’s Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates office. Babieh joins Severn Trent Services with extensive experience in the sale of water treatment products and project management. He has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology.

The winners of the Oil & Gas UK Awards 2010 have been announced at a ceremony to honour the people and companies who have made outstanding contributions to the success of the oil and gas industry. The principal sponsor of the event was Shell U.K. Ltd. In the individual category, Mark Arnold, captain of Craig Group’s Grampian Explorer platform supply vessel, won the award for overall excellence; Kevin Dunn, process engineer at BP, earned the award for young technician of the year; while Gill Cowlam,acting engineering authority at BP scooped the award for mentoring. In the corporate categories, Wood Group Engineering (North Sea) Ltd won the award for people development; and Aker Solutions was the winner of the business efficiency award.

Fluor Corp.’s chief operating officer David Seaton is to succeed Alan Boeckmann as chief executive officer and become a member of its board of directors, as of 3 Feb. Seaton joined Fluor in 1984. Prior to his appointment as COO, he served as senior group president, energy & chemicals, power, and government, as well as leading Fluor’s activities in China and the Middle East. He has also held various sales and operations roles in the US, Europe and the Middle East, including serving as MD of Fluor Arabia Ltd, and leader of the company’s global sales function.

Honeywell has announced the winners of its third annual student competition for design and innovation in the process industry. The 2010 competition featured two categories. The first - innovative use of Honeywell’s UniSim in-process simulation - was won by Roberto Totaro from the CMIC chemical engineering dept of Politecnico di Milano, Italy, with his entry ’A new Operator Training Simulator (OTS) feature: dynamic accident simulation’. The second category, the ’Control room of the future’ wireless challenge, was won by Mohamed Abdul Galeel Salih Mohamed and Mohamad Tamer Nader Chaklab from the electrical engineering dept of the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi, UAE, for their entry ’What will the control room of the future look like?’

Sheffield Forgemasters’ Peter Birtles has been appointed chairman of the Special Metals Forum - a national organisation which improves the global competitive advantage of special metals manufacturers. Birtles is non executive director at Forgemasters and has more than 40 years’ experience in steel and engineering sectors. He joined the Special Metals Forum in May this year and was elected by council members this month as chairman. Birtles takes over from fellow Forgemasters colleague and chairman TonyPedder who stepped down from the position after serving a three-year term.

Umberto della Sala has been named interim chief executive officer of Foster Wheeler AG as the company seeks to fill a vacancy created by Robert Flexon’s departure “to pursue other interests” after just five months in the job. Caretaker boss della Sala joined FW in Milan in 1973 as a process engineer. Following senior roles at FWUSA, he became commercial director and then president and CEO of FW Continental Europe. In 2005 he became CEO of FW’s global engineering & construction Group, and two years later assumed the role of president and COO – roles he will retain as interim CEO.

Heason Technology has appointed Jason Breslin to head up its technical sales team. He brings a thorough understanding of motion control and automation systems to Heason, having held senior roles in field sales and business development management with Newport-Spectra Physics for the past 10 years where he specialised in high and ultra-high precision positioning equipment system sales. He holds an MSc in advanced manufacturing technology, gained after a full engineering apprenticeship and positions in design engineering, research & development, manufacturing, logistics, and internal technical sales. The appointment follows the retirement of David Wheeler who played a formative role at Heason over several decades.

Tom Jones has joined the ATG main board as a non-executive director. Jones is also currently a strategic director with AMEC and is experienced in both strategic and operational roles. Prior to working for AMEC, he was director for major projects with Interserve, and has held the position of North West chairman of the ECITB, where he was a main board member between 2006 and 2008. Jones’ education includes a mechanical engineering degree, a masters in project management, a masters in business administration and he is currently studying for his Doctorate at Ashridge Business School.

ATG has apppointed Leigh Williams has been appointed as divisional manager, industrial automation. Williams has spent most of his career to date with two major industrial organisations, Associated Octel and Eli Lilly, where he progressed from his electrical apprenticeship to hold a number of senior engineering and project management roles in both companies. Most recently, he has held the position of specialist electrical inspector with the HSE. He holds a degree in electrical and electronic engineering and is a chartered electrical engineer.

David Harrow, managing director of UK-based Godiva Bearings, has been appointed president of the European Power Transmission Distributors Association. He will serve in the role for one year until September-October 2011. Harrow commented: “I have been part of the association since 2003 and have seen it grow to 190 members today. Our mission is to advance distribution and strengthen members to be successful, profitable and competitive in a changing market environment.”

Altran Praxis has appointed Stuart Matthews as SPARK product manager. He will work alongside Rod Chapman, who continues at Altran Praxis as SPARK technical authority. Matthews brings over 15 years of expertise to the role. He is a chartered engineer, a member of the British Computer Society and a chartered IT professional. He first joined Praxis in 1990, his work including a number of high-integrity software and systems engineering projects. He has since worked for a number of product-based companies.

Jim Stewart has been appointed business unit president, KBR Power and Industrial. Since June 2010, he has been the unit’s senior vice president. Prior to joining KBR, Stewart served as group vice president of Jacobs’ Engineering southern region. Prior to joining Jacobs in 2006, Stewart was chairman and CEO of Mobile Energy Services Co., and also served as chairman and CEO of CHI Energy. He also held executive leadership roles at CRSS Inc.

Per Harald Kongelf has been appointed executive vice president (EVP) for the energy development & services (ED&S) business area in Aker Solutions. He replaces Jarle Tautra who will continue to work for Aker Solutions as a special advisor to the CEO. Kongelf comes from the position as executive vice president for products & technologies (P&T). He has 25 years’ experience from the oil& gas industry, including senior positions in several major North Sea field developments such as Snorre, Sleipner A, Visund and Åsgard. In the P&T business, Thor Arne Håverstad, president of Aker MH, takes over the operational responsibility for all drilling equipment business.

Edmond Nowicki, a senior engineer at Weir Power & Industrial’s valve facility in Lille, northern France, has been awarded the ’Engineering Excellence through Innovation’ prize from Rolls-Royce as part of a team with Rolls-Royce engineers. The award recognised the R&D work the team completed on a new design of steam generator relief valve (SGRV) - a critical component of plant safety. The new valve design pushes out the boundaries of a soft-seated design in a high temperature application, and as a consequence has reduced manufacturing costs and made the valve even more tolerant to potential debris damage.

UK-based specialist measurement technology company Optical Metrology Services Ltd has appointed James Buston as the company’s client solutions executive. Prior to his new role, Buston spent six years working for a UK-based laser cutting & marking company, initially as a laser technician, but more recently as technical sales manager, personally achieving sales in excess of £1m this year. He also has experience in exhibition management, technical training and in providing teaching laser applications and theory to both academic and industrial clients.

Simon Nadin has recently joined Siemens Industry’s mechanical drives (MD) division as general manager, replacing Nick Garthwaite, who has left the Siemens group. Nadin joined Siemens in 1998, and has built up a strong track record of achievement in both the UK and Germany, within the fields of production and process management.  He was previously based at the company’s world drives factory in Congleton.

Andrew Evans has joined Victaulic as territory manager North West and Yorkshire. Evans has 25 years’ experience in engineering and construction. Having completed a craft apprenticeship, he gained an HNC in engineering from Salford University College and started work as a draughtsman. He continued his career as a design draughtsman at the Manchester head office of Hilti. A move into sales saw him progress through a number of roles in Hilti to become national key accounts manager.

Azelis has appointed Benoit Fritz as principals development director. Benoit has spent the last eight years at Dow Chemical Co. as commercial director for Dow’s wire & cable business in EMEA and previously, as market manager for the same division. He has also worked with DuPont-Dow Elastomers as the global wire & cable team leader for ethylene copolymers and as European sales development manager for ethylene copolymers. Benoit holds a master’s degree in organic and bio-organic chemistry at the Pierre & Marie Curie University in Paris.

Instrumentation company Ashtead Technology has appointed Jay Neermul as its dedicated sales manager for customers within the environmental monitoring market. Neermul, who joined the company two years ago in a regional sales capacity, is now responsible for Ashtead Technology’s comprehensive range of environmental monitoring instrumentation available for hire. He had eight years’ experience within the continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) industry prior to joining Ashtead.

Prof Brian Cox is to deliver the keynote address at NIDays 2010 - National Instruments’ graphical system design conference and exhibition, being held at the Institution of Engineering & Technology, in London on 9 Nov. At the event, Cox will explain ’Why We Need Explorers’, highlighting how curiosity-driven science can pay for itself by powering innovation, fostering a profound appreciation of our existence, and inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers. Tony Hacker has been appointed as general manager of UK-based ARPAC Europe Ltd - a new Europe-wide business for ARPAC packaging machines including shrink wrap, tray pack, case pack and pallet wrapping machines. Hacker brings 25 years’ experience in capital equipment, much of which was spent with Endoline Machinery.

CiVentiChem has appointed Glenn Killingworth as director of business development, a role covering its North Carolina HQ and facilities in Hyderabad, India. Killingworth recently worked at WiXi AppTec, where he was responsible developing European-centric global pharma companies. Previous roles include a post on the operational board at Peakdale Molecular, and at Almac Sciences in Northern Ireland. He was also business development manager at Fisher Scientific UK, where he helped introduce its custom synthesis business in the US.

Cogent’s annual skills forum 2010: Emerging technologies will take place 14 Oct at the House of Commons (12.45 registration for 13.00-14.30). The forum will focus on the skills needed to drive new technology and innovation and deliver competitiveness and growth for emerging technologies in the UK. Sperian Protection UK has appointed Alistair Inglis as business development manager for the oil & gas market. With over 20 years of experience in the PPE industry, Inglis has been promoted to the role from his previous position as area manager for Scotland, which he was appointed to in 2005. After nine years as a PGA qualified professional at Kinross Golf Club, Inglis moved into the PPE arena, his career including regional sales roles at DF Wishart, Totectors Ltd and Bolle.

WorldSkills London 2011, is recruiting engineering professionals to help oversee the global skills event, which brings together 1,000 young people for competitions across 45 skills. The event, 5-8 Oct 2011 at London’s ExCel, will attract over 150,000 visitors. Supervisors will be responsible for preparing materials, health & safety, security and workshop upkeep, and will support the judging panel. The job will take about a day per month for the next year, two or three days a month in the six months leading up to the competition and full-time for 10-12 days over the competition. Powder characterisation company Freeman Technology has appointed Jamie Clayton to the new post of operations manager, based at the company’s UK headquarters in Welland, Worcestershire. Clayton, who has a control engineering background and extensive technical sales experience, has been with Freeman Technology since 2008 in a role that has encompassed both sales and applications support. He will now be responsible for all the day-to-day activities of the company, including overall management of the administration, production, R&D, sales and customer support teams.

Grontmij has appointed John Chubb as its new managing director for the UK and Ireland, with effect from1 Oct. Lawrence Hughes, current MD of Grontmij in the UK and Ireland, will retain his role as chairman of the UK and Ireland board, as well as taking up the international group director role that he was appointed to in January on a full time basis. Chubb joins from VT Group, where he held senior positions across the environment, nuclear and communications sectors. Most recently, he was MD of the environment division, leading the integration of the waste-to-energy and nuclear businesses. Prior to this, he led the integration of the former BNG Project Services business into VT Nuclear Services. His background also includes roles with British Telecom, a career in the Royal Navy and a degree in engineering..

Thomas Hannon has become Alfa Laval’s principal representative in Ireland for heat exchangers and other heat transfer equipment, decanter centrifuges, high speed centrifugal separators, and refrigeration components including unit coolers and brazed heat exchanger. Based in Kells, Co.Meath, Hannon has a degree in chemistry and, prior to joining Alfa Laval, worked in engineering sales for companies such as Busch Vacuum Pumps and the Jones Oil Co.

Oil Spill Response Ltd (OSRL) has appointed Nick Hazlett-Beard as its new global head of operations. The appointment follows the departure of Thomas Liebert, who after 7 years is leaving for The International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds to oversee external relations and conferences. Hazlett-Beard joined OSRL in 2004 as business development manager. He was later appointed regional manager for North Africa and moves from that position to his new role. He previously worked for BP Oil and Vikoma, having started his career as a marine engineer in the British Army. He was also employed at the BP Oil Spill Response Centre, the forerunner of Oil Spill Response Ltd.

Winners of the 2010 Science, Engineering & Technology Student of the Year awards, have been announced at a 4 Sept ceremony in London’s Hilton Hotel. UK-based Oil Spill Response Ltd has appointed Kurt Kriter as its new regional representative for the Americas based in Houston, Texas. He was previously vice president, global environment, health, safety and social responsibility, at Hess Exploration and Production.

Solutia Inc. has named Mike Donnelly as president and general manager of its performance films division and Greta Senn as president and general manager of its technical specialties division. Donnelly most recently served as president and general manager of Solutia’s technical specialties division. He brings nearly 40 years of manufacturing, business and leadership expertise to performance films. Senn most recently served as vice president, business management of the technical specialties division. Her previous responsibilities included developing and implementing new strategies for some of Solutia’s most profitable product lines, including Solutia’s specialty fluids and Crystex businesses.

Gifford has appointed Steve Canadine as chief executive officer in succession to Mark Stevenson with effect from 1 Oct. Canadine joined Gifford in 1996 and is currently main board director responsible for leading its property market sector and has previously led sections of the building structures, development and environment teams. He has a BA (MA) in architecture and engineering from Cambridge University, a BSc in architecture from Bath University and is a chartered structural engineer. He gained an MBA from London Business School in 2003.

Prof Nick Jenkins from the Cardiff University School of Engineering has been appointed to an expert panel to advise the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority on funding to trial new ideas for the low carbon energy sector. Eleven projects that could speed up the development of the sector and deliver benefits are to compete for a share of the annual £64m of funding from the £500m Low Carbon Networks Fund. Jenkins is the director of the Institute of Energy within the School of Engineering at Cardiff University is one of two UK academics appointed as panel members who will each be serving a three-year term. He specialises in renewable energy and has extensive experience of industry and academia.

Ian Milne is to become president of Wood Group Pressure Control, replacing Scott Bender who is leaving the company to pursue personal interests. Milne has nearly 30 years of oil & gas experience in the US and UK and extensive knowledge of the global valve and wellhead market. Most recently he was vice president and general manager for North America, having served previously as vice president of engineering and marketing. His experience spans engineering, marketing, sales and senior management positions, including having served as global director of surface business at Cameron and as president of Grant Prideco’s Plexus Ocean Systems division.

Wood Group Pressure Control has appointed Gary Moore to take over the current duties of incoming president Ian Milne. Moore joined the company 25 Aug as vice president and general manager for North America. He has more than 30 years of experience with Halliburton in various positions, the last of which was senior vice president of its fluids systems division.

ENER-G has appointed Peter Southby as group finance director. He was recruited from West Yorkshire-based Augean plc, a £40m turnover support services company specialising in the management of hazardous waste, where he had been group finance director since 2006. Previously, Southby was group financial controller at White Young Green Plc consultancy in Leeds and prior to that, senior finance manager at Leeds United FC. Southby qualified as a chartered accountant in 1998 at Arthur Andersen before becoming an audit manager at the firm’s Nottingham office. He attended Oxford University where he gained a first class degree in French and history.

Stephen Green is stepping down from his position on BASF SE’s supervisory board following his appointment to become the UK’s minister of state for trade and investment effective early in 2011. He will therefore resign from BASF’s Supervisory Board in December 2010. His successor will be named at a later date. Green has been a member of BASF’s supervisory board since April 2009.

Hydratight, an engineering company providing asset integrity for the oil & gas, power generation and aerospace industries has appointed Jan de Koning, a veteran Actuant Corp. employee and most recently a member of its electrical segment leadership team, as its business leader. Prior to his role at Actuant, de Koning has held leadership positions with Power Packer, Enerpac and Kopp. He also has executive experience with operations, continuous improvement, sales and marketing for other industrial organisations. De Koning replaces Phil Maxted, who made the decision to step down from the position for personal reasons. Tarak Mehta, the global head of ABB’s transformers business, has been appointed to ABB’s executive committee as head of the low voltage products division as of 1 Oct. He replaces Tom Sjökvist, who is retiring at the end of September. Mehta, a US citizen, has been responsible for ABB’s Transformers unit since 2007. He joined ABB in 1998 and has held various management positions in the power products division in the US, Sweden and Switzerland. Before joining ABB, he worked for eight years at Cooper Power Systems in the US. Mehta has Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the University of Chicago.

Michael Brock has been appointed as chairman of Reson’s board of directors. With an MSc in acoustics, his experience includes terms as CEO of BK Medical, divisional director at Brüel & Kjær Sound & Vibration Measurement and president & CEO at GN Otometrics.

Grundfos Pumps Ltd has appointed Nick Christopher as area sales manager with responsibility for the company’s industry, water & waste distribution network in East Anglia, Midlands & Yorkshire. Christopher has several years’ experience working in pump sales and service. He will offer the Grundfos customer base a broad range of pump knowledge for clean water, sewage, irrigation, process and general industry pump applications.

The Ethernet POWERLINK Standardization Group (EPSG) has recently appointed Christian Schlegel, CEO of IXXAT, to its supervisory board. In this position, Schlegel follows Prof. Dr.-Ing. Konrad Etschberger who has retired. Furthermore, Laurent Schmitt, VP Strategy and Innovation at ALSTOM, is a new supervisory board member. Meech International has added to its UK sales team with the appointment of Paul Levene as sales engineer for the north of England. Levene trained as a mechanical engineer and has an in-depth knowledge of the packaging, converting and adhesives industries. He was most recently UK sales manager for adhesives for paper converting at Henkel.

Adept Scientific plc of Letchworth, Herts, has appointed Mike Pisapia as managing director of the company. He takes on this new role as Adept’s co-founder, Dr Paul Bragg, steps back from the day-to-day running of the company after 26 years at the helm. Bragg remains chairman of the Adept Scientific Group. Pisapia joined Adept in 2007 as general manager, with a strong technology and engineering background and strong track record in international business management. His areas of expertise also include data acquisition, test and measurement, process control, maths and simulation software, as well as strategic planning and business systems.

Sperian Protection UK has appointed Paul Tierney as its new national product sales manager for its hand protection products. He joins Sperian from Marigold Industrial where he was regional sales manager. With an HND in business and finance, Tierney started his career at Buck & Hickman in 1997 and initially worked in management accounts before becoming area sales manager for the company’s Birmingham branch. In 2003, he joined Marigold Industrial where he was a territory manager for five years looking after the West Midlands and South Wales, before being promoted to his most recent role.

LyondellBasell Industries NV has appointed Sergey Vasnetsov as senior vice president, strategic planning and transactions. He joins the company from Barclays Capital where he was managing director and head of its global chemical research group. Vasnetsov has worked since 1996 at several investment banks providing economic and financial research of the chemical industry. He has been recognised as a leading chemical analysts by the Institutional Investor Magazine in each of 2000-2009 annual investor surveys, and has a broad and deep knowledge of the global chemical industry. Vasnetsov has an MSc in kinetics and catalysis from the University of Novosibirsk, Russia.  He was a George Soros scholar at Oxford University and later earned an MBA in finance from Rutgers University.  He started his industrial career as a senior chemist at Union Carbide.

Engineering project management company PROjEN PLC, based in Preston Brook, Cheshire has recently recruited Richard Smith as an EC&I apprentice to finish his two-year apprenticeship scheme with the company. Smith joins PROjEN from TTE (Technical Training Group). PROjEN managing director Martin Seabrook said: “We are committed to the continued investment in the development of talent and the earlier we can catch them the better. The benefits involved in taking on an apprentice include higher productivity, quality of work, staff retention and employee satisfaction.”

DIN rail power supply manufacturer PULS UK has appointed Natasha Künker to assist with its sales and marketing operations at the company’s UK headquarters in Bedfordshire. She has recently completed a four-year course at Coventry University where she studied marketing and accountancy.

BP has appointed Mike Utsler as its lead representative in the Unified Area Command (UAC) and as chief operating officer for the BP Gulf Coast Restoration Organization, which manages BP’s ongoing response and restoration activities from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Utsler, who has served as BP’s commander in the Houma incident command post since April, replaces Doug Suttles, who has led BP’s overall response to the spill and served as BP’s representative in the UAC. Suttles will be returning to his role as chief operating officer for BP Exploration and Production in Houston. Prior to joining the spill response effort, Utsler served as vice president at BP, and brings more than 33 years experience to this new role.

Arc Energy Resources, a supplier of weld overlay cladding and fabrication services, has appointed Steve Bonell as senior projects manager with special responsibility for customer support services, joins the board as a director with responsibility for sales. Bonell, who joined ARC in 2007, is experienced in the oil and gas industry and knowledge of areas such as coating technology and deep sea oilfield equipment. Vince Wheeler has joined ARC as a sales engineer. He is experienced in selling welding and wear-prevention technologies in the cement, power and steel industries. Stuart Rhodes, who joined the ARC welding team 14 years ago, has been promoted from senior foreman to production manager.

Royal Dutch Shell plc has appointed Guy Elliott, chief financial officer of Rio Tinto since 2002, as non executive director and member of the audit committee of its board, with effect from 1 Sept. Prior to becoming CFO of Rio Tinto, Elliott held positions in marketing, strategy and general management at Rio Tinto and was president of Rio Tinto Brazil. He has been a non-executive director, chairman of the audit committee and senior independent director of Cadbury plc prior to its acquisition by Kraft.

Colortrac Ltd has appointed Rob van Brakel to its senior management team. He joins the wide format scanner manufacturer as marketing manager with worldwide responsibility for developing and implementing all elements of Colortrac’s marketing activities. He has over 30 years’ management experience in developing customer focussed marketing programs and supporting sales channels development within companies such as Xerox, STC and ITT.

Leuze has appointed Andy Fereday as regional account manager, serving the English midlands market for its machine safety products, such as light-guards, light-curtains, safety laser scanners, machine interlocks and safety inspections. Fereday has 20 years’ industrial experience, having spent the last seven years at Phoenix Contact selling automation and connectivity systems with which Leuze’s electronics sensors often integrate.

Tony Hayward is to step down as BP’s group chief executive as of 1 Oct and will be succeeded by fellow executive director Robert Dudley (see below). Hayward will remain on the BP board until 30 Nov. BP also plans to nominate him as a non-executive director of TNK-BP.” Read more

Bob Dudley is to take over as chief executive of BP on 1 Oct. He is currently a main board director of BP and runs its recently-established unit responsible for clean-up operations and compensation programmes in the Gulf of Mexico. He joined BP from Amoco after the merger of the two companies in 1998, and was president and CEO of BP’s Russian JV, TNK-BP, until 2008. BP’s new boss will be based in London and will hand over his present duties in the US to Lamar McKay, chairman and president of BP America. Read more

Tim Cejka, president of ExxonMobil Exploration Co., and vice president, Exxon Mobil Corp. is to retire on 31 Aug, after more than 34 years of service. Exxon Mobil Corp. expects to appoint Steve Greenlee as president of ExxonMobil Exploration Co. and elect him a vice president of the corporation effective 1 Sept. Greenlee is currently president, ExxonMobil Upstream Research Co. Meanwhile, ExxonMobil Upstream Research Co. is to appoint Sara Ortwein as president as of 1 Sept. She is currently vice president engineering, ExxonMobil Development Co.

Water quality engineering firm Panton McLeod has recruited Niall Armstrong as sales & marketing assistant. The Heriot-Watt university graduate previously spent two years with Petrofac’s Aberdeen office: working in the business services department before being promoted to the role of business development analyst within the sales and marketing team. The appointment is the third major staff addition that Panton McLeod has made over the past year. It follows the appointment of Scottish civil engineer Barclay Smart and business development manager Colin Gibbs at the end of 2009.

Ellon-based LFH Engineering was set up by local businessman, Les Hill, last month following his purchase of the pump-making division of Peterhead-based Terex Powertrain (TP), part of US-based Terex Corp. The former plant manager at TP took all 26 former staff of the division with him to LFH, and has now expanded the senior team. The company, which manufactures marine diesel engine coolant pumps, has appointed Chris Leiper as finance manager. His experience includes posts in the manufacturing and oil & gas sectors over the past 25 years, latterly with Wood Group (North Sea). Kathleen Singleton, sales and marketing manager, and Scott Pilkington, production manager, have also been appointed, having previously worked at TP. Pilkington has over 20 years’ experience in the pumps industry, while Singleton previously held a management and HR role within TP. Completing the team is Neil McArthur who has joined as company chairman, and has 40 years’ experience in the financial and industrial sectors.

Sheffield Forgemasters apprentice Jordan Elliot, has finished second in the Craft Skills category of the nationwide 2010 Metskill Metals industry apprentice of the year. Elliot is in his second year as a maintenance apprentice fitter at the 200-year-old manufacturing specialist. Steve Tagg, group training and development manager at Forgemasters, said: “Jordan has done amazingly well and everyone here is very proud of him. He takes a real interest in his work and tries to ensure that every task is completed perfectly.” Apprentices make up nearl 10% of the workforce at Sheffield Forgemasters’ Brightside Lane site.

Southampton-based engineering training provider SETA has officially opened its second building at a ceremony led by Kevin Hobbs, manager of ExxonMobil’s Fawley refinery – one of the biggest employers of SETA apprentices and will be a major user of the new facility. SETA had outgrown its HQ and snapped up the nearby two-storey building in Millbrook, so that it can now branch out with training for commercial courses for electricians and those completing apprenticeships. SETA is a regional training centre for Achievement Measurement Two for electrical apprentices, and for Comp’Ex qualifications for people working in explosive atmospheres, such as refineries and flour mills.

Robert Matthews, a PhD student at the University of Bristol, has won the ’2010 Fiona and Nicholas Hawley Excellence in Environmental Engineering Award’ by the Worshipful Company of Engineers. The prize was in recognition of his incubator design for microbiological testing of water sources where electricity supply is unpredictable. It is part of a water test kit to test the safety of drinking water in areas where where technical resources are limited. Matthews is a postgraduate engineer conducting research for the Aquatest research programme at the Water and Health Research Centre in the University’s department of civil engineering.

In collaboration with COGENT and the National Skills Academy Process Industries, Redcar & Cleveland College has developed a new NEBOSH accredited Safety, Health & Environment qualification, which will meet the COGENT Gold Standard of compliance competencies needed for Process Operators and Technicians. There are no entry requirements to the course and it is studied over 16 weeks on a flexible basis, with some workplace assessment and a multi-choice examination.

Industrial services company Hertel has appointed Nick Henderson to its main UK board as operations director UK, with responsibility for operations in Scotland, Humberside, East Anglia, the South East, South West and South Wales. Henderson has been with Hertel for nine years and was most recently regional director for Wales and Humberside. In previous roles he has been a site manager on major contracts including the Ineos Fluor Chlorine plant in Runcorn and the Chevron refinery in Pembrokeshire.

Bosch has announced the winners of its Bosch Technology Horizons Award - an essay writing competition, backed by the Royal Academy of Engineering, that aims to raise the profile of engineering and technology amongst young people. Winner of the top prize of £700 for the 14-18 year-old age group, was Caitlin Willis, from Chelmer Valley High School in Essex. The first place prize of £1,000 for the 19-24 year-old age group, went to Thomas Dean, from Loughborough University.

Clyde Process Solutions has appointed Jan van Bakergem as director of petrochemicals. He has held a number of senior management positions with some of the leading providers of material handling technologies in the petrochemicals market and will bring significant knowledge and expertise to the group. CPS said van Bakergem will lead the development and implementation of a global petrochemicals strategy based from its North American operations.

Foster Wheeler has announced that Chris E Covert has been named president and chief executive officer of the company’s Houston-based subsidiary Foster Wheeler USA. Covert fills the position formerly held by Robert Flexon, who assumed the role of chief executive officer of Foster Wheeler on 1 June.

Thorite has announced the appointment of Paul Belfield to the position of key accounts manager, based at the company’s Bolton Sales and Service Centre. He will be responsible for managing and increasing business with manufacturing and processing industry accounts in selected areas of the north west.

Christophe Burckart has been appointed as MBU EMEA senior vice-president of Sperian Protection. He succeeds Marc Beaufils in this position. Prior to his appointment, Burckart served as the director of professional services for Dell EMEA and oversaw all facilities management and consulting sales.

Lincoln Crankshaft & Machine has appointed Peter Smith as technical sales manager for all divisions of the business, including crankshaft, shaft and machining; precision forged products; and crankshaft refurbishment.Smith is an incorporated engineer and qualified metallurgist and has spent most of his professional life in sales management positions for specialist manufacturing companies, working both in the UK and overseas.

Intellitect Water has appointed Alan Pickett to the role of senior sales executive, to support sales of its unique in-pipe water monitoring technology. He joins Intellitect from similar roles previously held at Severn Trent Services and Siemens Water Technologies.

Simen Lieungh is stepping down from his position as president & CEO of Aker Solutions. CFO Leif Borge will act as president until Lieungh’s successor has been recruited. During this period, Øyvind Eriksen will take on the CEO role – in his capacity as executive chairman of the Aker Solutions board. Lieungh has been with the company for 22 years. After his early days as a planning engineer, he was rapidly promoted to project director and then executive director, before becoming president & CEO of the company.

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies has announced three new appointments: Mike Butters as the company’s new project director, Ray Tillier as municipal business development manager and senior proposals manager, Kevin Dupres. All three joined the company last month.

FLIR has created a new UK manager’s post and filled it with someone who, it said, “needs no introduction to the industry” – but we will anyway. Andy Baker has just completed 20 years in the industry and his involvement in thermal imaging technology pre-dates his time with FLIR. Baker was previously UK sales and marketing manager for Inframetrics, a company that developed the world’s first portable uncooled thermal imaging camera and was subsequently bought by FLIR. Initially he chose a regional sales role with the newly-expanded FLIR but in recent years has been the company’s distribution manager.

The 2010 SWIG (Sensors for Water Interest Group) Early Careers Researcher’s Prize competition has been awarded to James Shucksmith of Sheffield University, for his presentation on ’Leakage detection by use of Pressure Transients’. The £500 prize recognised James’ work on a new method of detecting leaks in water distribution networks which involves the analysis of a pressure wave introduced into a pipeline. A prototype of the device is currently undergoing field tests within the Yorkshire Water distribution network

Independent industrial consultancy AV Technology has recently appointed Stephen Hill as offshore CBM general manager. Following a 22-year career as a Royal Navy Marine Engineer, Hill has built up a further 15 years’ experience in condition-based predictive maintenance and equipment reliability, including providing offshore CM from Aberdeen.

Dr Kathy Ridgway has been appointed as technical specialist for flavour in RSSL’s investigative analysis department. She joins from Unilever’s safety and environmental assurance centre, where she gained extensive experience in the analysis of off-flavours, and identification of taints and other trace contaminants. Her PhD thesis was on ’Determination of trace contaminants in foods’, and her expertise is well recognised having written papers and prepared several chapters on sample preparation techniques, taints and off-flavours.

Jacques Delmoitiez, currently president of BASF’s Polyurethanes division located in Brussels, Belgium, will become president of BASF’s regional division Europe, located in Ludwigshafen, Germany effective 1 Oct. The current president, Dr. Walter Seufert is retiring as of 30 Sept.

Foster Wheeler AG has appointed Michael Liebelson as executive vice president and chief development officer, with responsibility for developing and leading the company’s global growth strategies, including mergers and acquisitions. He has 25 years’ experience in the energy industry, was most recently chief development officer for low carbon technologies at NRG Energy. Prior to that, he was co-founder, in 1990, and co-manager of LS Power Corp., an independent power producer in the US. He also previously served as co-head of Commercial Union Energy and held commercial, financial and refinery engineering positions with Ahlstrom Pyropower, Air Products and Chemicals, Exxon and Chevron. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and an MBA in finance.

Robert Flexon has assumed the role of chief executive officer of Foster Wheeler AG. He replaces Ray Milchovich, who will remain as non-executive chairman of the board of directors and will serve as a consultant to the company until November 2011. Flexon had most recently served as president and CEO of Foster Wheeler USA. Prior to joining the company in November 2009, he had been executive vice president and CFO of NRG Energy Inc. He had also served as a member of the Foster Wheeler AG board of directors from 2006 until November 2009.

Kurt Bock is to succeed Jürgen Hambrecht as chairman of BASF SE, with Martin Brudermüller to become vice chairman. Both appointments will take effect on 6 May, 2011. “Kurt Bock is an entrepreneur with an extensive international experience. Under his leadership, he will continue the company’s success together with his colleagues on the Board of Executive Directors and the global BASF team,” said Eggert Voscherau, chairman of the supervisory board of BASF SE. Further BASF board appointments are to be made in early 2011.

Desmond King, president of Chevron Technology Ventures, has been appointed as the 69th president of IChemE. King, who succeeds Ian Shott CBE in the post, holds a PhD in chemical engineering from Cambridge University, UK and a Bachelor’s degree from Imperial College. He was a chemical engineering college professor for two years before joining Chevron in 1981. Read more

Boiler company Fulton Inc. has restructured its UK business and appointed a new managing director and sales and marketing manager. New MD Paul Richards brings extensive knowledge of high-pressure steam and level control systems having previously worked for Solatron. Meanwhile, Carl Knight has been appointed as UK & European sales and marketing manager. He joins Fulton from Spirax Sarco. The moves follow recent personnel changes at Fulton, including the retirement of both its sales & marketing and technical directors.

Dee Doocey has joined the Association of Consultancy and Engineering’s Advisory Board, which acts as a sounding board on industry, political and economic issues for ACE. Doocey is this year’s chair of the London Assembly and one of its Liberal Democrat elected members. Her interests include the legacy from the 2012 Olympics and transport.

The Centre for Food Robotics and Automation Ltd (CenFRA) has appointed Steve Blazye as its new managing director. He brings extensive experience to the Doncaster-based organisation following his time in industrial engineering, specialist heat treatment and robotic integration systems.

Manchester business improvement firm Picme has trained the millionth graduate under the Learning and Skills Council’s often controversial Train to Gain scheme. 24 year-old process pperator Chris Scott, who works at inorganic chemicals manufacturer William Blythe Ltd, was able to complete his Level 2 NVQ in Business Improvement Techniques ’with flying colours’, after coaching from Picme engineers.

Royal Haskoning’s Fola Ogunyoye has been appointed chair of CIWEM Rivers and Coastal Group, which helps guide UK and EU policy relating to rivers and coasts. A member of the group for 15 years, Ogunycoye is also supervising mentor for CIWEM’s development training for graduates within Royal Haskoning, and runs the CIWEM professional development scheme to enable graduates become chartered members of the institution. He has 19 years’ civil engineering experience, and exper tise in managing river and flood defence systems, and developing flood improvement schemes.

Chartered chemical engineers are apparently shrugging off the recession, and are in fact earning on average 5% more than they did in 2008, according to the IChemE 2010 UK and Ireland Salary Survey. Chartered chemical engineers annual pay currently averages £60,400, compared to £57,500 in 2008. Those in the 30-39 age bracket, it found, typically earn around £8,500 a year more than a non chartered chemical engineer of the same age. Read more

Tony Lyons has joined Sheffield Forgemasters as project director of Steel Propeller Ltd - a new subsidiary set-up to manage large-scale projects. He will also manage Forgemasters’ £140m part Government-funded 15,000 tonne press project. Lyons joins from Dutch contracting company Volker Wessels. With an MSc degree in project management, City & Guilds in electrical & mechanical engineering, he started as an RAF apprentice, followed by 20 years in the metals industry at Davy McKee, and Siemens VAI. His senior management roles have included operations director and director of stainless steel.

Dounreay security expert Malcolm Clark has taken the top award in a contest organised by the World Institute of Nuclear Security (WINS). His paper on ways to improve the security of nuclear material around the world came out top in an essay competition open to almost 300 organisations in 48 countries. Clark earner the first prize of 1000 Euros and an invitation to speak at a special security summit at the 2010 IAEA general conference in Vienna in September. Read more

SATRA divisional manager Christine Ohren-Bird has been appointed as the new chairman of British Standards Institute (BSI) committee TCI/69. She takes over the role from Richard Turner, who retired as SATRA chief executive in 2009 and served as chairman of TCI/69 for 34 years. The BSI TCI/69 technical committee establishes and maintains a suite of standards for footwear, leather and coated fabrics.

Process software company PAS has recently appointed William Dennison as vice-president and general manager of its Europe and Africa operations. Dennison recently joined PAS from Honeywell International Inc. where he worked in sales and operations for nearly 30 years. Roles at Honeywell Process Solutions included global sales leader, and EMEA sales director for chemicals and metals, mining, and minerals industry markets.

Texture analysis and materials testing firm Stable Micro Systems has appointed Dan Pearson as an exports sales manager. Pearson received his honours degree in engineering from Brunel University and has since acquired international expertise in texture analysis and materials testing of polymers, pharmaceuticals, food and biomedicals.

Richard Ratcliff, previously global wastewater technology leader for MWH, is now heading up its water sector in Europe & Africa. Ratcliff joined MWH in 2000 to lead a wastewater, sludge and odour process team on United Utilities’ AMP 3 programme, and also became the European wastewater knowledge manager. After roles at MWH’s Asia Pacific region where, based in Sydney, then in Dubai, he returned to the UK in 2007 as technology leader for international projects.

Process companies can receive up to £650 for the cost of training female employees under a new Cogent an initiative for the ’science-using’ industries. The Cogent SSC Women and Work Programme, it said, is intended to support the skills development of women, particularly into non-traditional technical roles. Read more

Optical Metrology Services Ltd (OMS) has appointed Richard Brown as products engineering manager, based at its UK office in Bishop’s Stortford. Brown returns to the UK from New Zealand, where he spent eight years working as a product development engineer at Steelbro (NZ) Ltd. He brings extensive experience in embedded control systems development, compliance and software architecture to OMS. Brown has also been a consultant engineer for Optical Metrology Centre, a City University London spinout, which specialised in 3D measurement using photogrammetric techniques and pipe measurement using advanced proprietary profiling tools.

Gareth Meese has been named export sales manager for Magnet Applications Ltd, part of Bunting Magnetics Co. His primary responsibilities will be sales in the UK, the EU and the African continent. Meese, who holds a BSs degree in physics from the University of Wales, has over eight years of sales experience primarily in the financial services, factory automation and industrial equipment industries.

Deritend Industries has appointed David Garman as non-executive chairman. Garman’s experience includes spending nine years as chief executive of logistics group TDG, which he held from 1999 until the company’s takeover in 2008. Prior to TDG, he spent 20 years at United Biscuits in a range of management roles and was a director and chief executive of Allied Bakeries. Other positions held include non-executive director of Phoenix Group plc, and of Carillion plc, where he is also senior independent director. Garman is also a business adviser for Enterprise Ireland.

DIN rail power supply manufacturer PULS UK has appointed Mike Moore as sales manager for the UK. He joined PULS in 2009 having previously worked as sales director of a computer software company. Moore has a degree in electronics from Nottingham University and is currently studying for an MBA at Warwick University.

Aberdeen-based METCO Services Ltd, part of Emerson Process Management, has gained approval by the Scottish Qualifications Authority to deliver the Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in measurement processes (maintenance), which is an internationally recognised qualification. METCO, said Emerson, is believed to be the only measurement company in the world currently able to deliver a qualification assessment of this type for measurement technicians.

NORD Drivesystems has appointed Jürgen Jendryschik as managing director of technology. After a transitional period, G.A. Küchenmeister, the company’s founder and MD, will retire from active work. NORD will continue to be led by an executive team of five members, that also includes Jutta Humbert, Ullrich Küchenmeister, Peter Dittmers and Jens Paulsen. Dr.-Ing. Jendryschik’s last position was with a major German manufacturer of frequency inverters.

Peter Meier, chief financial officer and member of the executive committee, has decided to leave Sulzer in order to pursue a career opportunity outside the company. Meier, who has spent 18 years with the company, will leave Sulzer by the end of October. A search process is ongoing and his successor will be announced in due course, said Sulzer.

Engineering project management company PROjEN has recently recruited Simon Forshaw as head of projects. He joins from James Fisher & Sons PLC, where he was responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of its strategic asset management unit. He also led the major projects business, developing and delivering engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) projects. Forshawe has also worked for Siemens UK and had responsibility for a portfolio of major projects, with particular experience in renewable energy and biogas. He is a chartered engineer, a fellow of the IET and gained his BEng from the University of Salford.

Prof Stathis Ioannides has been presented with the Leonardo da Vinci award for his advanced tribology work. The Italian Association of Industrial Designers award recognises his achievements in bridging the gap between tribology theory and its application throughout industry, and his contribution to the design of new rolling bearings. Ioannides retired from his position as director for product engineering in mid-2009, after working for SKF for nearly 30 years. He still works with SKF on a consultancy basis and remains a visiting professor at Imperial College London.

CB&I has appointed Richard Flury as non-executive chairman, succeeding Jerry Ballengee who has retired from the company. Flury has been a supervisory director of CB&I since 2003, and a consultant to its supervisory board since 2002. He was previouslychief executive, Gas and Power for BP plc from 1998 until his retirement in 2001 and served as executive VP of Amoco, from 1996 to 1998.

Grundfos Pumps Ltd has appointed Julian Lowe as business manager with responsibility for its industry, water & waste (IWW) projects team. Lowe has extensive experience in the wastewater pumps sector. Further to this appointment, Andy Wilson, who has been with Grundfos Pumps for 11 years, will expand his role, providing a national focus on consultants and developing service partnerships to further strengthen the Grundfos offering to water utilities.

Gus Bol is to head up a new Trolex industrial division. Bol, who had formerly been a director of Crowcon Instruments, has over 20 years’ experience in gas detection.

Neal Hillier has joined Icon Polymer as group sales director. He previously worked for Serck Aviation, part of the Meggitt Group, where he was director of sales for thermal management. Hillier has also spent nearly ten years with Dunlop Precision Rubber.

Andy Woodward has been appointed Performance+ global sales manager at valve engineering services company Severn Unival, part of the Severn Glocon Group. He has 15 years’ experience in control and choke valves for the oil and gas industry.

ENVIRON has appointed Niall Smiddy as its UK managing principal. Based at the consultancy’s Bath office, he was previously its managing principal for Wales and the South West. A specialist in environmental management system implementation, GHG consulting, environmental reporting, environmental auditing and risk management, Smiddy leads ENVIRON’s power sector group. Before joining ENVIRON in 1996 he was National Power’s corporate environmental manager.

Schneider Electric has announced that from April 2010 their Motion and Drives national sales team will double in size, to support the continued growth in this area of the business. Since its creation in 2009, the Motion and Drives team headed up by Anthony Pickering and Paul Pryor has expanded due to increasing customer demand, which is expected to rise further with the launch of the new Altivar 32.

Boge Compressors has recently appointed Martin Taylor as the Area Sales Manager for the South of England responsible for developing sales and the distributor network in the region.Taylor brings considerable industry and engineering knowledge to his new role having spent over 29 years in the compressed air sector working for both manufacturers and distributors in the industry.

Severn Trent Services has promoted Rick Bacon to director of operations for its Water Purification division. Bacon will have responsibility for the management of Severn Trent Services (UK) and Severn Trent Water Purification (Italy).

Thorite has appointed Paul Andrew Scriven to the position of sales administrator – branches, based at the company’s Bradford Head Office. He will be responsible for the co-ordination of sales activity generated by Thorite’s nine regional sales and service centre branches, based throughout Yorkshire, Lancashire and the North East, as well as providing support for both customers and field sales staff.

Bill Adamson has joined Europa Oil & Gas (Holdings) plc as non executive chairman. He has worked at BG Group Plc managing all aspects of large gas businesses including CNG, power generation, JV management, corporate governance and risk and safety management. He was chairman and CEO of MetroGas SA, Argentina’s post-privatisation gas utility, VP and general manager of BG Group’s UK Downstream and most recently MD BG India. A chartered engineer, Adamson holds an honours degree in gas engineering from the University of Salford.

United Drug plc has appointed Chris Brinsmead as a non-executive director. Brinsmead was chairman of AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals UK from April 2008 to 31 March 2010 and president of AstraZeneca UK from January 2002 to April 2008. He is currently president of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry. Brinsmead is a civil engineering graduate from Nottingham University and holds a masters in business science from Manchester Business School.

Robin Davies, Subsea 7’s global vice‐president ‐ business improvement, has been appointed the Oil & Gas UK association’s new contractor co-chair, replacing Bob Keiller, CEO of PSN, who has come to the end of the two-year term for this post. Gordon Ballard, chairman of Schlumberger Oilfield UK Plc, has also been elected to the Board as the new vice contractor co-chair, replacing Mike Bowyer, upon his retirement from Halliburton. Heidi Mottram has taken up her new role as chief executive of Northumbrian Water, as of 1 April when she replaced John Cuthbert who retired. Mottram joined the company on 1 March from Northern Rail Ltd, where she had been managing director for five years.

Hima-Sella engineers James Hibbert, Tim Marsden, Chris Parr and Carl Toft have gained TÜV Functional Safety (FS) certification, which covers the application, principles and requirements of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511. In recognition of certification, Marsden, Parr and Toft have been appointed as principal engineers, joining a company team that provides advice and technical expertise to clients. The company’s functional management safety team includes Nigel Banner and Ian Parry, both TÜV certified in 2008, James Hibbert and Chris Williams.

D1 Oils has recently announced that its chairman Brian Myerson has left the board. Myerson’s departure is reportedly over a rejection of his plans to move the group away from growing energy crops and back to its original role as a producer of biofuels. Barclay Forrest, a non-executive director, has assumed the role of chairman.

Konrad Etschberger, founder of IXXAT Automation GmbH and co-partner of IXXAT Holding GmbH has stepped dopwn as managing director of IXXAT Automation and become chairman of the advisory board of IXXAT Holding. Together with the long-standing MD and co-partner of IXXAT Holding, Christian Schlegel, Werner Sauter will manage the company as its business manager. IXXAT Automation supplies data communication products and services for the automation and automotive industries.

Pectel, a division of Keltbray, has recently appointed Ken Butler as health & safety manager. Butler joins Pectel following a career spanning 15 years in the construction, asbestos and hazardous waste industry. He is a chartered health and safety professional; holding a NEBOSH diploma and chartered membership to the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and full membership to International Institute of Risk and Safety Management.

Steve Shaughnessy, president of Canada-based manufacturer Skyjack Inc, has been elected president of the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF), succeeding John Ball of Height for Hire Ireland. Shaughnessy started his career in the family business Shaughnessy Crane Service in the US and ran its access rental division. He was later regional VP and COO of Chicago-based NES before joining UK-based A-Plant as director of its access business. He was MD of rental company Loxam in the UK, before stepping into the manufacturing side of the business with Skyjack.

Tony Wratten has been appointed deputy managing director of Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd in March 2010. He has been director of assurance of DSRL since its formation in 2008. Wratten started working at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston in 1984; later transferring to the Department of Energy in London and then joining UKAEA at Harwell in 1993 as head of R&D and strategy. He moved to Dounreay on a permanent basis in 1998 and held a number of posts managing waste and decommissioning before becoming head of assurance in 2006. Wratten graduated from the University of Bradford with a degree in chemical engineering.

AEG Power Solutions has appointed Stuart Priest to the new role of UK channel manager. This is the latest in a number of strategic appointments made by the company to develop sales of its UPS products through channel partnerships. Priest has worked in the IT channel since 1996 and is a well known figure in the UPS marketplace. He has experience in setting up and developing new channels and routes to market.

ReFaC – the REACH Facilitation Company for Europe’s chemical supply chain – has recently appointed Dr Darren Staniforth as business development manager – a role he previously held at Bostik Ltd. Staniforth graduated in chemistry at Lancaster University where he also undertook doctoral research. He moved into technical sales management with Evode Ltd. In 2000, he joined Bostik, where he became business development and product manager and involved in various aspects of REACH compliance and communications with suppliers and downstream users.

His industry knowledge enables him to bring a wealth of experience to ReFaC delivering the range of REACH services from late pre-registration, through to the dossier submission and authorisation of substances.

Measurement rental business Microlease has appointed Paul Manduca as chairman. He joins with considerable business and financial experience and currently holds external directorships with companies, including Aon UK and Wm Morrison Supermarkets plc.

Microlease has appointed Phil Symms as authorised technology partner (ATP) sales manager for UK/Ireland. He joins Microlease after ten years with Agilent Technologies, where he held a variety of managerial roles. Latterly, he was EMEA manager for the applications engineering organisation – Electronic Measurement Group. He has also held a string of pan-European technical and sales roles at Hewlett Packard.

Wood Group Engineering (North Sea) Ltd has appointed Robin Watson as the new managing director of its asset operations business, where he will be responsible for the current duty holder business with clients including Centrica, Ithaca and Premier Oil. Watson will also be responsible for the company’s significant Hess and TAQA Northern North Sea accounts, the Glasgow engineering office and the operations functional support team. With more than 20 years’ industry experience, he was most recently the head of production for Petrofac’s energy development business.

Lyondell has appointed Bob Patel as senior vice president, olefins and polyolefins, Americas.  He will be based in Houston. Patel was most recently general manager, olefins and NGLs for Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. Previously he served as general manager, Asia Pacific region, based in Singapore. Since joining Chevron Phillips Chemical and Chevron Chemical Co. in 1990, he held a number of manufacturing, marketing, strategic planning, business management and general management positions.

Ben van Kooten, business group director DSM Resins, is to retire after a successful – if at times media-shy – career at DSM of 35 years. He will be succeeded by Dimitri de Vreeze, at present business unit director DSM NeoResins. He will work with van Kooten through a transition period and will assume responsibility for DSM Resins at the beginning of Q4/10.

Helen Atkinson and Julia Stretton Higgins have been named among UKRC’s Women of Outstanding Achievement 2010, for leadership and inspiration in science, engineering and technology. Atkinson is professor of engineering and head of mechanics of materials research group at the University of Leicester. She is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Higgins is a former principal of the faculty of engineering at Imperial College London, a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society and a world leader in the field of polymer science and technology.

Middlesbrough engineering frim Teesside Precision Engineering Ltd is creating 21 new jobs with the help of a £95k Grant for Business Investment from One North East. The start-up, which provides engineering services to the offshore industry, was established by investors, David Dean, Roger Metcalfe and Russell Coates who have extensive engineering industry experience. They have purchased the building and assets of Campbell Machine Co. Ltd, which went into liquidation in 2009 following a loss of key customers.

Six individuals with business experience have today been named as ’industry champions’ to help develop a foundation degree framework with the polymer, chemical, petrochemical, nuclear and bioscience sectors. They are to work with their lead higher education institution, as well as collectively as a consortium, to develop a framework is flexible in its delivery and meets the needs of employers. Read more

PULS UK has appointed Kelly-Ann Bruce as business development manager to promote its range of DIN rail power products in the UK. Bruce joins the sales team after spending two years with PULS as an administrator and management accountant which has given her insight into all aspects of the company’s activities and products.  She also gained considerable technical and sales experience working with other members of the team in the UK and in close liaison with PULS’s headquarters in Germany.

An engineering firm has become one of the first companies to receive funding from a £60m pot aimed at accelerating job opportunities across the Tees Valley.
PD & MS Energy (Teesside) Ltd is to create up to 27 new skilled jobs over the next two years with the help of a £185,000 Grant for Business Investment from the regional development agency One North East and the Tees Valley Industrial Programme. The company provides engineering design and draughting services primarily to the offshore engineering industry and the funding will allow it to purchase computer equipment and engineering software and to expand operations at its base in Port Clarence, Stockton.

Øystein Løseth has taken over as CEO of Vattenfall, replacing Lars Josefsson who has retired. Øystein Løseth was until recently CEO of the Dutch energy company Nuon, which was incorporated in the Vattenfall Group on 1 July 2009. Løseth is civil engineer graduated from Trondheim. He has worked in the energy industry for almost 25 years, starting at Norwegian Statoil in 1984 and later working at both Statkraft and Naturkraft before joining Nuon in 2003 as managing director of Sourcing and Trading. Five years later, in 2008, he was appointed CEO of Nuon.

Safeware Quasar’s MD Hazi Mistry and director Simon Robinson have been chosen to speak as experts in their respective fields at the 2nd International Fresenius Conference, discussing the implications of the new Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The ’Implementing the GHS’ conference will take place in Cologne, Germany, 26-27 April. GHS is a UN-backed initiative to standardise the laws around how dangerous chemicals are labelled and described globally.

Airchannel managing director Alastair Shanks has been appointed to the British Compressed Air Society’s (BCAS) board of directors. At 33-years-old, Shanks is the youngest board member. He has worked at Airchannel for over five years and has been in his current position since 2007. “With around 10% of the UK’s industrial energy consumption being used to generate compressed air, we need to establish measures to help compressed air users reduce energy usage as well as address environmental concerns,” said Shanks. “One of my key aims is to support the efforts of the BCAS team to ensure incoming legislation is practical, appropriate and effective.”

Marcos Ramos has been named president of Alcoa Europe effective 8 March, succeeding Rudi Huber, who has retired. Ramos will continue as president, global primary products, Europe, leading Alcoa’s smelters and refinery in Iceland, Italy, Norway and Spain. He joined Alcoa Aluminio in Brazil in 1984, later leading smelter operations and technology at Elkem Aluminium NS. In 2003, he became smelter manager for San Ciprian, Spain, and in 2005, manufacturing director for primary products Europe. In 2007, Ramos assumed his current role leading all European primary facilities.

Nine GAMBICA member companies including four new members have formed a new Inter-Connection Technologies Group, within GAMBICA’s Industrial Automation Sector. The Group’s inaugural meeting appointed Stuart Jaycocks, from Weidmuller, as chairman and welcomed new member companies ContaClip UK, Phoenix Contact, Wago and Wieland to the roster. The other member companies in the group are ABB, Legrand, Rockwell Automation and Schneider Electric. The scope of the new Group includes a range of terminals and connectors for power, signal and data in industrial applications. It includes DIN Rail terminals, assemblies, PCB connectors and a range of accessories.

ITT Water & Wastewater has formed ITT Projects, a 12-strong team to improve its capabilities in the UK’s water and wastewater treatment industry and increase its fluid handling and treatment offerings. The team, headed up by Duncan Leathley, has expertise in water treatment processes, product knowledge, systems design and engineering. It will be responsible for project management, implementation and installation of complex solutions, such as sewage treatment facility refurbishment.

EAL’s managing director Ann Watson has been short-listed for the National Women on Their Way Awards 2010 in the women in construction/engineering category. In her four years as MD, Watson has advanced the company’s provision of vocational courses for the engineering and manufacturing sector. The winner will be announced on Friday 19th March at the Women on Their Way Annual Awards Lunch taking place at Aston Villa Football Club, Birmingham.

Engineering company Modulift have appointed Sarah Spivey as new managing director for the group. She will continue to head the sales and marketing division alongside her new role.

Vacuum technology company Edwards has appointed Wolfgang Binder as general manager, Europe responsible for sales, service and the development of technologies and applications for European customers. Binder joins Edwards from Applied Materials, where he spent 14 years managing the company’s key account teams at AMD, Infineon and Qimonda. Prior to this he worked in a number of roles at IBM in Sindelfingen, Germany. He was also programme director at IBM’s European HQ in Paris.

Haas Automation Europe has appointed Peter Zierhut as its new managing director. A founding member of Haas Automation Inc., Zierhut has held a number of senior management positions during his 26-year tenure at the company’s head office, including director of its service, sales, marketing and IT departments. Peter Hall recently announced the end of his seven-year run as the company’s MD. He is returning to Haas Automation Inc., in Oxnard, California, where he will take up a business-development role.

Process software company PAS has recently appointed Jim Huff as vice-president of technology. He joins PAS from Invensys where he was vice-president of Product Marketing and Portfolio Management. Huff’s career includes roles spanning the engineering & services, consulting, and marketing disciplines with leading companies such as Emerson, Apsentech, and Invensys.

Sheffield Forgemasters QA engineer Phil Willoughby has retired 50 years after joining the company as a 15-year-old apprentice. He is one of three generations of Willoughby men to work at the Brightside Lane site, with his son currently part of the sales team. Read more

AEG Power Solutions, a supplier of UPS products and power systems, has appointed Gary Browning to the role of EMEA channel development director. Brownoing has a BA (Hons) degree in business studies, specialising in international marketing pathways and 10 years’ practical experience of the IT industry with a track record in developing IT channel business for market leader APC.

Materials testing, analysis and consultancy firm CERAM has appointed Paul Myers as principal consultant for refractories. Having studied at CERAM during his PhD, Myers worked as a senior scientist with CERAM, working with many clients in the refractory sector, and has, since then, worked with refractories producers, Parkinson Spencer Refractories and Dyson Thermal Technologies, as group technical manager. His first degree was a B.Eng. in industrial mineral engineering from the University of Leeds and his master’s degree was in chemistry with new materials from Aberdeen University.

HJ Heinz Co. has appointed Bob Ostryniec as chief supply chain officer - a newly created role to drive worldwide initiatives. Ostryniec joined Heinz in 2003 as group VP, supply chain for Heinz North America, and was promoted to chief supply chain officer for Heinz North America in 2005. Before joining Heinz, he spent more than 17 years with GE and Stanley Tools in various manufacturing, purchasing and supply chain roles. In his last position with GE, he was VP of manufacturing for European operations.

Siemens IA&DT, part of the UK Industry Sector, has announced the appointment of two divisional directors to lead its future strategic direction and operational delivery across the industry automation & drive technologies businesses in the UK. Reporting to the IA&DT managing director, Brian Holliday and Andrew Peters have been promoted to oversee the next stage of development for their respective areas of the IA&DT business. Holliday will take on specific responsibility for the Industry Automation division, with Peters assuming responsibility for Drive Technologies. The appointments, said Siemens, are designed “to drive synergies and complementary strategies across both business areas to support its ‘Power of One’ business strategy.”

Schneider Electric has appointed Richard Beighton as national commercial manager industry, within its automation and control sales team. Beighton is an automation and control expert, having spent almost 30 years with a number of the sector’s leading players. His background includes a decade at Schneider in a variety of roles. His previous roles have also included design engineer and sales positions with the some of the industry’s biggest names.

Chris Norris has returned to BEKO Technologies as regional manager for southern England. Norris started his career as a technical engineering apprentice at a major compressor manufacturer before moving to an air treatment company and becoming area manager responsible for service and after market activity within the southern region. He was responsible for co-ordinating a team of six engineers, supporting all group products and alternative competitor products.

Mott MacDonald’s Ian Clarke has been elected chair of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering’s new Middle East Group.  Simon Harden of Waterman Plc has also been elected the group’s secretary. Informally set up in April 2009, the group is composed of more than a dozen members and includes non member firms that are active in the region. Nelson Ogunshakin, ACE chief executive, said: “Ian Clarke and Simon Harden both have experience and expertise in consultancy and engineering services in the Middle East.  They will be invaluable as we establish a significant role for the group in the coming year.”

Pneumatics and linear motion company Matara has expanded its sales force with the appointment of Graham Hudson to cover the Home Counties, south and southwest England and south Wales. Hudson joins Matara with a strong pedigree in the field, including 20 years of directly relevant experience and 13 years as an aircraft engineer in the RAF before that.

Peter Still, industry standards manager at Schneider Electric, has been announced as the chairman for the CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) committee TC44X, which has the title “Safety of machinery: electrotechnical aspects”. The previous chairman left the role last year. Still has been involved with TC44X for the last 14 years. He said a crucial aspect of the role would be “to ensure the committee’s standards can be harmonized under the Machinery Directive, giving machine designers a route to compliance with the electrotechnical requirements of the directive.”

David O’Reilly, former Chevron chairman and CEO, has been elected to Bechtel’s board of directors. O’Reilly joined Chevron as a process engineer after earning his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from University College in Dublin. He is vice chairman of the National Petroleum Council and a member of The Business Council, J. P. Morgan International Council, the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council, and the American Society of Corporate Executives. Read more

BP has appointed Paul Anderson as a non-executive director of BP plc with effect from 1 Feb. He is a non-executive director of BAE Systems plc and of Spectra Energy Corp. He has just stood down as a non-executive director of BHP Billiton. Anderson served as chief executive of BHP and subsequently BHP Billiton between 1998 and 2002, and as a non-executive director of BHP Billiton from 2002 until 2010.

Thorite has appointed Mike Perry as major accounts manager, based at the company’s Bradford head office. Perry joins Thorite from SMC Pneumatics, having previously worked for Kimberley Clark, after spending eight years in the RAF.

Sector skills body Cogent is developing national occupational standards and qualifications to help companies in the process sector address increasing regulatory and business pressures to improve the sustainability of their operations. These will be incorporated into the Gold Standards and Nuclear Job Contexts to provide a clear list of requirements for each job role. The occupational standards will form the basis of all the new qualifications, and so must accurately describe the skills and knowledge required by the industry. Cogent, therefore, needs to know that the standards accurately describe the skills and knowledge that companies see as essential to sustainable business practice. Read more

BEKO Technologies has promoted Richard Spires to north Europe group manager. Joining BEKO in 1999 with over 10 years’ experience of working in compressed air distribution, Spires was area sales manager responsible for BEKO’s Midlands sales region. He was then responsible for developing the market for a BEKO deep cooling system for the plastics industry, before returning to BEKO UK as general manager for the UK and Ireland.

Katy Worton, a postgraduate in occupational psychology from the University of Sheffield, has joined DavyMarkham’s marketing team.Worton was educated locally at Stocksbridge High School and Barnsley College, before studying for a degree in psychology at the University of Hull, then latterly qualifying for her Masters at Sheffield. As a requirement of her masters degree, she undertook a consultancy project at DavyMarkham, which reviewed the effectiveness of current policies and procedures. From this project, recommendations were made to the company and all have now been successfully implemented.

Press belt manufacturer Sandvik Process Systems has appointed Jörg Kaufmann to the position of global product manager for the wood-based panels market, with responsibility for all regions except Asia and Turkey. Kaufmann has been with Sandvik since the mid-1990s and is currently Belt sales manager and key account manager in Germany, a role that he will retain alongside this new position. He will work closely with Johan Sjögren, who has overall responsibility for Sandvik Process Systems’ belt business across all industry sectors and is based at the company’s headquarters in Sandviken, Sweden.

BEKO Technologies has appointed Steve Riley as general manager of its BEKO UK operation. Joining BEKO with over 30 years’ experience in the compressed air industry, Riley has worked with some of our distributors and more recently worked as the UK sales director for one of BEKO’s competitors. He has sold all types of compressed air products and most types of compressed air treatment equipment.

Catherine Milner MIOM, Associate Consultant at Inventory Matters Ltd, has been appointed as the new chair of the Institute of Operations Management. She succeeds John Theophilus. Milner, a chartered engineer, comes to the office after involvement with IOM since the mid-1980s and has worked in the UK and Europe for a number of organisations in aerospace, telecommunications and petrochemicals.

Friedrich Keglowich is joining the Swiss sensors company Contrinex AG’s managing board on 1 Feb, as chief business officer (CBO) to head up international sales, marketing and product management. After completing a degree in electrical engineering, Friedrich Keglowich worked for BBC AG (now ABB) for 10 years, and then for SICK AG for nearly 20 years, including as managing director and industrial sensors division manager. Annette Heimlicher, daughter of the company founder, will also join the Contrinex board on 1 Feb, remaining in charge of corporate development. She has previously overseen the company’s market entry in Brazil and has been building up its industrial safety unit.

Hi-line Industries Ltd has appointed Kevin Morris as business development manager, with responsibilities for OEM accounts, distributors and compressor manufacturers or suppliers. Morris has been involved in the compressed air industry for his whole working life. This started with a technical apprenticeship at Denco, where he also had experience on external sales activities. A move on to Ultrafilter provided more sales experience and he then moved on to Beko Technologies, where he stayed for over 8 years and had been sales manager for UK and Ireland since 2007.

Humber Chemical Focus, in partnership with the National Apprenticeship Service is staging an event to introduce the new Process Technicia Apprenticeship. This free event, being held 4 Feb at the CATCH facility, Stallingborough, is part of National Apprenticeship Week. Key note speaker, Paul Mannion of TOTAL Lindsey Oil Refinery, strong supporters of the scheme, representatives from the National Apprenticeship Service and the Training Providers will deliver the programme content.

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies has appointed a new managing director for its UK business.  Bob Hook, who has held senior positions in a number of major organisations within the water treatment sector, assumed the role on 1 Jan 2010. Ole Roesdahl, who had been responsible for the UK business for the past three years, is returning to Denmark following his secondment to the UK. He will remain with the Veolia Group and will become the executive vice president of Krűger, Nordic region of VWS global.

Thermal Energy International Inc. has appointed Grant Bailey as sales director of its subsidiary company in the UK, which markets energy recovery, conservation and bio-energy solutions including steam traps and heat recovery solutions. Bailey is a respected industry expert and a member of the GEM team since April 2004. He started his career at the Atomic Weapons Establishment as a mechanical engineering apprentice, whilst completing his higher BTEC. Working up from the shopfloor, he has since developed with over 20 years of sales and management experience.

Huub Meessen is to succeed Dr Ralf Kuhlmann as chairman of the Association of Petrochemicals Producers in Europe. Meessen is vice president Europe at SABIC. He studied Industrial engineering and management science in Eindhoven and joined DSM in 1987 where he has held several positions in the polyolefins business. Within SABIC he became director demand chain management in 2001, director business unit LL/LDPE in 2004, managing director polymers and Member of the SABIC Europe board in 2008, and VP Europe in 2009. Kuhlmann, who is business director basic chemicals Europe at ExxonMobil Chemical, will retire in March 2010.

Geoffery Merszei has recently taken up a new role as president of Dow Europe, Middle East and Africa. He is also serving as chairman of Dow Europe, and executive VP of Dow Chemical. Merszei, who served as Dow’s CFO for the past five years, has relocated to the company’s European Headquarters in Horgen, Switzerland. Merszei first joined Dow in 1977, and spent two-thirds of his career in locations outside the US, including assignments in Europe and Asia. He returned to Dow in July 2005 as executive VP and CFO, after serving four years in these roles at Alcan Inc.

KBR has appointed Mark Williams as the group president overseeing its government & defense, infrastructure & minerals, and power & industrial business units. The appointment, effective 18 Jan, completes a year-long reorganization of KBR’s non-hydrocarbon business units. Williams joins KBR from Jacobs Engineering, where he most recently served as group VP of Jacobs’ northern Europe region and managing director of the Dutch and German units serving the oil, gas and chemicals private sector industries.

Richard Darton has taken office as president of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE). Darton, who was IChemE president in 2008/09, succeeds Jiri Drahos in the post. He is joined by newly elected executive vice president, Wridzer Bakker who succeeds another past IChemE president, John Garside (1994/95). A fellow of Keeble College, Darton currently heads the department of engineering science at the University of Oxford - a department that he established in 1991, following a successful career with Shell, in the Netherlands. A fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Darton’s research areas include dynamic surface effects at gas/liquid interfaces and he chaired the EFCE Working Party on Fluid Separations from 2001-07.

Future Capital Partners, a £6bn alternative investment boutique, has appointed Piers Denne as head of sales & marketing to lead its business development strategy, which includes the construction of a wheat-to-bio-ethanol plant in the UK. Denne bring 23 years’ of financial services experience to his new role. During this time, he has held senior marketing and distribution roles with some of Europe’s largest asset managers, including Gartmore, Fidelity and Threadneedle.

Daniel Grasset has been appointed as president, Total Resins (Cray Valley, Sartomer and CCP). A graduate from Ecole Nationale des Arts et Métiers’ engineering school, He joined the Total group as a process and specialty equipment engineer at Ethylène Plastique and CdF Chimie. In 1983, he was appointed VP, specialty polyethylene production at CdF, then general manager of Orkem’s Resins’ Drocourt plant. He then spent five years in the US as VP, operations of Cook Composites & Polymers before being appointed VP, ink production and MD of UK subsidiary Coates Lorilleux, followed by a stint as VP, Europe at Sun Chemical. He later became VP Europe, coating resin production at Cray Valley, then CEO of Grande Paroisse SA, renamed GPN.

AEG Power Solutions has appointed Michael Adams as global VP for data & IT. Adams began his career as a design engineer before starting his own standby power business. Following a move to the UK, he took on the role of UK and Ireland country manager for American Power Conversion (now APC by Schneider Electric), becoming managing director in 2004 and subsequently filling the post of EMEA director of professional services. He left APC in 2007 to lead a start-up business and prior to joining AEG Power Solutions, was providing IT/data services consultancy to a range of blue chip organisations.

Former SAP executive John Taylor has joined Aspen Technology Inc. as vice president sales operations and business consulting for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Taylor was previously SAP vice president, process industries EMEA. His executive leadership experience in enterprise software also includes 10 years at i2 Technologies, where he led a 130-member business consulting organisation focused on the chemical, oil and gas and pharmaceuticals industries. He will be based in AspenTech’s Reading, UK office.

Hima-Sella has appointed Neil Hibbert as key account manager for safety and control, Nathan George as sales applications engineer, John Chadwick as technical support group supervisor. Hibbert worked previously in Hima-Sella’s Technical Support Group. His replacement Chadwick joins Hima-Sella with experience of working offshore in oil and gas operations. For the last three years he’s been coordinating a team of engineers responsible for the overall running of an offshore oil platform. George, as sales applications engineer, joins Hima-Sella from AWS Electronics. He replaces John Lunt who retired at the end of the year after 20 years’ service.

Richard Seale has been appointed as president of Mustang’s automation and control business unit, replacing Don Colchin who has retired. Seale was previously manager of projects for the business unit. He has over 30 years’ experience in the automation industry, and has held various positions in automation engineering and project management in refining, chemicals and offshore and onshore oil & gas.  Seale is a certified project management professional and is a registered professional engineer in Texas.

Robert Flexon is to become chief executive officer of Foster Wheeler AG, with effect from 1 June, 2010. He will replace Raymond Milchovich, 60, who is remaining with FW as non-executive chairman and consultant to the company through October 2011. Flexon, who is currently president and CEO of Foster Wheeler USA, joined the company on 16 Nov 2009, having previously been executive vice president and CFO of NRG Energy Inc., a wholesale power generation company primarily engaged in the ownership and operation of power generation facilities and the sale of energy, capacity and related products. He had also served as a member of the FW board of directors from 2006 until 16 Nov 2009. He holds a BS in accounting and is a certified public accountant.

Adept Scientific plc of Letchworth, Herts, has taken on two new members of staff.Chris Denly has taken up the newly created position of sales manager, maths and simulation at Adept.  An experienced sales professional specialising in IT based solutions, with a background in mathematical computing software, he has knowledge of mathematical modelling and simulation software and e–learning packages as well as the academic, corporate and research marketplaces. Mick Chivers takes over as part-time warehouse assistant. He has broad business experience in areas including customer services, logistics and security.

Hill & Smith Holdings PLC has appointed Bill Whiteley as a director of the company and as chairman with effect from 1 Jan. Whiteley spent the majority of his career at international engineering group Rotork plc, where he was chief executive from 1996 to 2008.  In July 2009, he became chairman of engineering group Spirax Sarco Engineering plc, having been a non-executive director for seven years.  He is also a non-executive director of Brammer plc and Renishaw plc and was a non-executive director of Dialight plc, formerly Roxboro Group plc, from 2001 until earlier this year.

Elliot Murray and Yvan Fasquel have recently joined motion control company Heason Technology Ltd from technical support roles with Danaher Motion where they worked across the US group’s product lines including the Kollmorgen and Dover lines that are also offered by Heason. Murray, who has a manufacturing systems degree, joins Heason’s field-based team with over four years management experience in motion control applications engineering, and will provide on-site support for motors, drives, gearboxes, actuators and positioning systems. Fasquel, a French national, gained his early experience through an acclaimed apprenticed training system in mechanical engineering and industrial automation, and has worked in the UK’s motion control industry for more than four years. He will be based at Heason’s HQ in West Sussex to provide customers with front-line technical support and detailed motion systems application proposals.

Joan Traynor, currently managing director of Chance & Hunt, has become managing director of all Azelis operations in the UK. In addition to Chance & Hunt and Brown & Gilmer, she will now lead S. Black UK and Broste UK. The appointment is a result of an overall regional and international business restructuring program designed to achieve growth targets.  To this end, Neil Berry, former MD of S. Black, will concentrate on his role as international business director, personal care.

Michelle McDowell has been elected as the Association for Consultancy and Engineering’s first woman chair. McDowell, who has been ACE vice chair for the last year, assumes office on 1 Jan. She sits on the board of BDP and is chair of their civil and structural engineering group. She will be focusing on the challenges facing the engineering sector: infrastructure investment, planning regulations, the move to a low carbon economy and the potential skills shortages. McDowell has worked on the Academy and BSF programmes, bringing schools to deprived areas across the UK.  Other projects include Royal Albert Hall and award-winning offices for the BBC and Roche.

Dr. Jürgen M. Geißinger, Schaeffler group president and CEO, has been elected as president of the World Bearing Association (WBA) at the organisation’s fourth annual meeting in Tokyo. The WBA was established in 2006 as an umbrella organisation for the American Bearing Manufacturers’ Association (ABMA), the Japan Bearing Industrial Association (JBIA) and the European Bearing Manufacturers’ Association (FEBMA). The WBA represents the leading global bearing suppliers, with combined sales of approximately Euro20bn, or around 75% of the rolling bearing market worldwide.

Ex-Solutions Consulting, a Pyroban company that helps organisations manage fire and explosion risk, has appointed a new process safety systems specialist.  Ian Harrison joins the company with extensive experience helping companies meet their legal requirements under DSEAR/ATEX, assessing risk, classifying areas, inspecting, designing and verifying installations for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Foster Wheeler AG has appointed Clive Vaughan to the newly created post of chief executive officer, upstream oil and gas group, in it’s global engineering and construction business. Vaughan joins FW from Endeavour International, where he was director of facilities engineering and new developments. He previously worked for Granherne Ltd, part of KBR, and a global energy-industry engineering company, based in the UK. Granherne has operations in North America and Russia - and in Australia, where Vaughan had most recently been the MD. Vaughan has also held engineering and management positions with Saipem, BHP, McDermott and British Gas Corp, and holds a BSc in chemical engineering from the Polytechnic of Wales.

Alan Coley, head of capability and business transformation for the environment service stream at support services company VT Group, has been appointed to the main Board of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear. Coley’s three-year appointment, effective from November 2009, reflects VT’s presence in the nuclear industry. The Hampshire-based group is also a major provider of vocational training with around 20,000 learners a year, including about 5,000 engineering apprentices. The National Skills Academy for Nuclear has a remit to create, develop and promote world class skills and career pathways to support a sustainable future for the UK nuclear industry.

Emerson Process Management has recently appointed Bob Sharp as president, Europe, based at its head office in Baar, Switzerland. Sharp previously served as president of Emerson’s Rosemount Level & Marine division, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, and replaces David Dunbar who has left the company after two years in the job. Sharp joined Emerson in 1996 and has held several senior management roles within the process business, including global VP of the Rosemount temperature business, and before that VP, global marketing within the Rosemount division.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Michigan Technological University and a master of business administration from Harvard Business School.

Atlas Copco Compressors has appointed Nigel Smith as manager of its Aftermarket Compressor Technique Service division, and Paul O’Neill as manager of its Oil-Free Air division, both based at the company’s Hemel Hempstead HQ. Smith is a qualified mechanical engineer with a diploma in finance. O’Neill joined Atlas Copco Compressors Ltd in November 1993 as a sales engineer covering the North West of England for both oil free and industrial air products.

Yorkshire-based NSF Controls has expanded the sales team for its electro magnetic components and solenoid switches. Nev Bettney joins the Keighley manufacturer as sales co-ordinator and Jodie Grant as sales assistant. Bettney previously spent 16 years working for Japanese company Pioneer Technology. He has extensive experience of working with large blue chip companies such as Sony, JVC and Sanyo. Grant joins from a previous position of field sales.

Pearson Harper, an engineering information management company based on Teesside has appointed Keith Joseph as business development manager. Joseph has extensive engineering experience and has worked within the oil & gas, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, water, sewage and nuclear sectors. He progressed through an accredited engineering apprenticeship and mechanical engineering degree during his 11 years at Costain Engineering, whilst simultaneously achieving instrument engineer status. He went on to develop his expertise over the next 13 years at Energy Solutions International and Atmos International - both software companies specialising in pipeline management systems

UK business minister Pat McFadden has announced the appointment of Philip Sturrock to the Industrial Development Advisory Board (IDAB). Sturrock has been managing director of publishers Pitman Books Ltd and Routledge & Kegan Paul plc, as well as chairman and CEO of Cassell plc and The Continuum International Publishing Group Ltd. He holds chairman and non-executive positions in both private and public sector organisations.IDAB provides advice to government on proposals to provide selective financial assistance to industry.

Sontay, a supplier of control peripheral products, has promoted Alan Braybrook to the board position of sales & marketing director. Moving from his previous post as sales manager, he will be responsible for the continued success of the company’s commercial team, supported by promotional campaigns, which together have delivered a strong sales performance over recent years.

3M has appointed four new members to the marketing team for its Industrial Tapes and Adhesives Division. Faye Wilson returns to the division as business development manager for Rite-Lok products following an assignment focusing on brand building and lead generation for 3M’s Construction Division. Wilson has been with 3M since joining the Industrial Tapes & Adhesives division in a sales role before moving into product management. Marketing executive Imran Idrees joined 3M in 2006 on a graduate programme, after completing an MEng (Hons) in aerospace engineering at Bath University. Since then he has worked in various divisions and functions including 3M Health Care and Outsource Manufacturing, and joins the Industrial Tapes & Adhesives team with responsibility for adhesives. His most recent role was at the European Occupational Health & Environmental Safety Laboratory where he was a product development engineer. John Fyall rejoins 3M as a graduate marketer having completed a marketing placement within 3M Health Care as a student at Oxford Brookes University, where he gained a BA (Hons) degree in business management. Finally, Kirsty Horsfall will be with 3M on a year-long placement as part of her marketing degree at Bournemouth University.

Adura Technologies has appointed Jack Bolick, former president of Honeywell Process Solutions, as its new CEO. He replaces Adura co-founder Zach Gentry, who will become its chief strategy officer. Gentry said: “Jack has demonstrated these attributes throughout his career, most recently at Honeywell where he grew HPS from $1.5bn to $3bn in just six years.” Adura, which applies low-power wireless mesh networking to the lighting market, was founded in 2004 under the auspices of research grants provided by the California Energy Commission¹s Public Interest Energy Research grant programme. In 2008, Adura raised $5m in a Series A venture round from Claremont Creek Ventures and VantagePoint Venture Partners.

Artesis, a supplier of intelligent predictive maintenance solutions, has appointed Dr Robert Pietruszkiewicz as the company’s UK technical manager. Bringing numerous years of experience and expertise in remote monitoring systems design to the role, Robert is responsible for technical support, both pre- and post-sales, providing customers with complete technical care, advanced diagnostic services and after sales support.

If you want to learn to become either a private or commercial pilot then you will need to get the right training in order to get your pilot license. You can train with a private certified instructor, or take aviation program through a local airport that offers such training. Thanks for sharing.....aviation program kwigorlak AK
